Inland Breaks Ground in Southampton at Chapel Riverside

Specialist housebuilder and brownfield developer Inland Homes has welcomed dignitaries from Southampton City Council to a ceremony held to celebrate breaking ground at its new Chapel Riverside development, on the banks of the River Itchen.

Attendees at the event, including Leader of Southampton City Council, Councillor Simon Letts, visited the site of the former town depot close to Ocean Village to mark the significant progress being made on the 457 home scheme.

Chapel Riverside is one of Southampton’s main regeneration opportunities and has an approximate GDV of £100m. It is set to transform the former town depot with a range of homes, from one bedroom to family properties, all located in a walkable environment with easy access to the river and Southampton city centre.

Chief Executive of Inland Homes Stephen Wicks said; “This is a significant milestone in the development of what is going to be a fantastic new riverside destination for Southampton. It’s great to have our friends and colleagues here supporting us in our endeavour to create the newest big project in this exciting and fast-moving city.”

Leader of Southampton City Council, Councillor Simon Letts said; “The ceremony of ground-breaking at the Chapel Riverside development area marked the second phase of Southampton City Council’s Itchen Riverside VIP (Very Important Project). It’s wonderful to see the area that was once the Council’s Town Depot site becoming prime waterfront estate.

“The Chapel Riverside development will provide a mixed-used destination, with over 450 residential properties, marine based employment space and most importantly a public access waterfront walkway providing river views for residents and visitors.”

The Chapel Riverside scheme will include residential properties in a mix of heights and building types. The scheme also features a new square with cafes, restaurants and shops as well as spaces for retained and enhanced marine industry and activities.

Plans for the transformation of the site include 300m of river flood defences, the reconstruction of a new underground surface water storage tank for Southern Water and full archaeological investigations of the former Chapel of the Holy Trinity, dating from before 1217AD, as well as a medieval mill and Saxon burial ground on the site.

Henry VIII is recorded as having made a mini-pilgrimage to the Chapel on his visit to Southampton in August 1510.

The first phase of development at Chapel Riverside is anticipated to complete in summer 2018 onwards and will include 72 one and two bedroom apartments. Final completion of the site is expected in 2022.
