Nature lovers can visit Hamford Water, Abberton Reservoir or the Blackwater Estuary for wetland birds and coastal wildlife. If you fancy an afternoon of sailing head to Heybridge Basin or West Mersea, which, with its sandy pebbly beach is great for crabbing, windsurfing and a traditional beach day. For families, Maldon’s Promenade Park makes for a great summer’s day out with its splash park, galleon & fort play area, Pirates Bay Adventure Golf and model boat lake.

Famed for its jams and preserves, a trip to Tiptree’s jam museum and tea rooms is a must. Historic buildings such as Coggleshall Grange Barn, a 13th century monastic barn, is one of Europe’s oldest timber framed buildings and Layer Marney Tower, with 99 steps to the top for incredible panoramic views over the Essex landscape, are a short drive away from Tiptree. Sports enthusiasts will enjoy the nearby Five Lakes Golf and Spa Resort with two 18 hole courses, spa, gym and leisure facilities.

Colchester, the former capital of Roman Britain, is claimed to be the oldest town in England and offers a selection of museums including East Anglian Railway Museum, Natural History Museum and the Castle Museum, as well as Colchester Zoo, home to 260 different species of animals. Alternatively, head to Chelmsford to experience the impressive 15th century cathedral or a night out at the Old Court Theatre.

Chelmsford is 13 miles away or a couple of stops on the mainline from nearby Kelvedon station and is one of the most popular shopping destinations in Essex. With its pedestrianised High Street, two shopping precincts and new Bond Street development, it offers everything from big brand shopping to independent retailers. For a more traditional experience, visit Colchester for its old market, tea rooms, farmers’ market and wide range of classic pub food.

Tiptree and the surrounding areas offer a plethora of first-class schools. Near Chelmsford you’ll find the King Edward VI Grammar, New Hall Private School and Chelmsford County High School for Girls, all well respected. In Colchester there are two dominant state grammar schools; the Colchester Royal Grammar and Colchester County High for girls, both of which are judged “outstanding” by Ofsted.
